“There are more Indians with sitcoms now than 7-11’s. My last three roles were Randy, Chet and Tom.” – Aziz Ansari at the James Franco Roast.
I don’t think everyone is racist when it comes to Indians. I just think they get lazy with their material. There have been jokes and stereotypes over the last couple of decades that have persisted for various reasons. Indians run conveniences stores, smell funny and look like apes. Hilarious right?
Well a bunch of people roasting James Franco on Monday night found some of those exact stereotypes, directed at Ansari, quite funny. The most outdated and tired joke came courtesy of Natasha Legerro when she said this:
“Aziz is only in show business because he’s too ugly to be a genie. If I wanted to get yelled at by a humorless Indian, I’d read a magazine at a 7-11.”
Classic. No seriously, I heard that one when I was 8 from a redneck school bully (see what I did there?). It really takes me back. Either way, Ansari came back on stage with some of the best lines of the night when he took down the stereotypes and homophobia present in the room.
“I think it’s so cool that some of you guys were able to travel back in time to 1995 for those Indian jokes you did. That’s so cool. Those stereotypes are so outdated. My God. There’s more Indian dudes doing sitcoms than there are running 7-11s. We are straight up snatching roles from white actors. My last three roles were Randy, Chet and Tom.”
I half expected him to pull from his character “Ed” on “Scrubs” and finish with “RECOGNIZE!”
In fact, why don’t we finish our post with that one.
